The Boston Celtics are in the thick of the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, but a former NBA star doesn't believe they're better off with the Milwaukee Bucks star.
Boston is reportedly a finalist to acquire Antetokounmpo from the Bucks, who could deal the MVP before Tuesday's draft. Rumors have centered on a massive swap for Jaylen Brown, who earned a second-team All-NBA selection by posting a career-high 28.7 points per game this season.
The idea of trading Brown for Antetokounmpo confused DeMarcus Cousins. The retired All-Star big man suggested Monday on FanDuel TV's "Run It Back" that Boston should stay the course with the 29-year-old Brown over the 31-year-old Antetokounmpo.
"It's a little weird for me ... They have more of a championship window with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum moving forward," Cousins said. So, if you look at them offering a younger asset in Jaylen Brown for Giannis, it kind of shortens up their championship window."
While he still played at an elite level, Antetokounmpo averaged his fewest points (27.6) and assists (4.8) per game since 2017-18 last season. Cousins doesn't anticipate many more peak years from the 10-time All-Star, so he feels the Celtics would have more time to chase another title if they keep Brown and Jayson Tatum together.
"Obviously, his prime is coming to a close," Cousins said. "So when you think about it from that standpoint, it doesn't quite make sense. With the way they're built now, they're still a championship-contending team ... I don't quite understand why they would go all-in."
