FIFA might not have done anything wrong in overturning Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension. But good luck convincing anybody the organization with a history of corruption didn't do something a little corrupt.
The optics are bad on this one. Even if you agree, like most people, the red card on Balogun was bogus.
The problem isn’t that FIFA did something USMNT fans pleaded for the moment Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute of Wednesday's win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Which is right a wrong and overturn a bad call. The problem is FIFA said the red card couldn’t be appealed... then apparently allowed it to be appealed -- by the POTUS.
Donald Trump placed a direct call to his buddy and FIFA president Gianni Infantino to ask for a review. Now, he's taking a victory lap about the result. Of course, people think something fishy happened.
Belgium, which was understandably stunned by FIFA's decision to rescind Balogun's suspension, is appealing. FIFA's rules don't allow for political interference in its processes. Also, suspensions just aren't normally overturned like that. A ruling may or may not come before they play the USMNT on Monday night.
Is it possible FIFA arrived at the decision to overturn Balogun's suspension on its own? Maybe. FIFA told POLITICO the decision was made by an independent disciplinary committee. But this isn't a group that deserves the benefit of doubt. Especially not when it comes to Trump, who Infantino once gifted a made-up peace prize in his attempts to curry favor.
Balogun should have never been issued a red card and suspended, but bad calls happen. Canceling a penalty after a call from a nation's leader shouldn't happen either. It sets a precedent FIFA will have to stand on going forward.
Chris Johnson's ALS diagnosis has revived the Ice Bucket Challenge, which originally went viral in 2014 to bring awareness to ALS and encourage donations for research.
Some of the latest participants include Adrian Peterson, Devin Hester, Deion Sanders and Johnson's former Titans teammate, Vince Young, among many more.
A 2021 study showed NFL players are about four-times more likely to develop ALS than the general public, as head trauma has been linked to the disease. One of Johnson's requests upon going public with his diagnosis was that the NFL "steps up, invests in research and continues working to protect players."
