Some 40,000 runners and walkers are expected to toe the starting line at one of this weekend's Flying Pig races. If you're planning to follow any of them to the finish line, there are a few ways to do that.

Flying Pig app

The race offers participant tracking through the PigWorks app for the marathon, half marathon, relays, 10K and 5K races.

The app estimates the participant's finish time based on the estimate given at registration. It will update that time and send notifications at certain points on the course:

  • Full marathon: Start line, miles 6.38, 11.74, 13.1, 19.9, 25.2, and the finish line.
  • Half marathon: Start line, mile 6.38 and the finish line.
  • 10K: Start and finish lines.
  • 5K: Start and finish lines.

Participants can also be tracked live through the app if they have the feature enabled on their phones. But some participants told The Enquirer that has lagged behind a little in past years.

Live tracking through phone, GPS apps

If your runner plans to carry their phone, there are several apps that will update their location frequently for people whom they have sent a link to.

Popular GPS fitness watch companies such as Garmin and Coros have features in their respective phone apps. Activity app Strava has a "beacon" feature that does the same thing.

You can also use location sharing in map apps on Apple and Android phones.

Flying Pig race schedule

Here are the start times for the races being tracked:

  • 10K: 7 a.m. Saturday.
  • 5K: 9 a.m. Saturday.
  • Half marathon and full marathon: 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
