Leo Carlsson is the superstar who can turn this rebuild into a major success. The young stars in Trevor Zegras, Porter Martone, Matvei Michkov, and Owen Tippett are great players for the orange and black. With Carlsson, it makes this group one of the most dangerous in the Metropolitan Division.
General Manager Danny Briere didn’t overspend in free agency. This could be on purpose. With Carlsson being available for teams to place a bid on him, Briere saw an opportunity and put the NHL on notice. Philadelphia also made the Ducks think more quickly about what to do with Carlsson. The Ducks have less than a week to decide whether to let Carlsson go to Philadelphia in exchange for four future first-round picks or to extend his contract.
The Flyers have the cap space to pull off this type of gamble. Leo Carlsson is worth more than those future first-round picks. That is the risk being taken by Philadelphia. The Ducks must match the offer Philadelphia presents, and for Anaheim’s side, they can’t let Carlsson wear orange and black for a different team.
A promising trio of Leo Carlsson, Matvei Michkov, and Porter Martone could shine for years. Anaheim is in a tough spot and must decide on extending Carlsson; otherwise, he will join the Philadelphia Flyers.
