Contrasting styles will meet at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium this weekend when Florida softball hosts Texas Tech in the 2026 NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.

The No. 6 seeded Gators (51-10) are one of the old guards of the sport. With 13 Women’s College World Series appearances, they’ve become a regular fixture in OKC. Sure, coach Tim Walton has utilized the transfer portal, but many of Florida’s best players – such as Taylor Shumaker and Keagan Rothrock – are those he recruited from high school.

The No. 11 Red Raiders (55-6) are the nouveau riche of college softball. They made the WCWS for the first time in 2025 on the back of NiJaree Canady’s “million dollar arm.” The run – all the way to the championship series – made them beloved in the sport, but TTU got the transfer of many top players from other powerhouses. This enraged coaches like Tennessee’s Karen Weekly and made Texas Tech “villains” in the sport.

So, yeah, the storylines will be all around Friday-Sunday, but which team has the edge?

Here are our keys to the series and a prediction.

Can Rothrock keep up with Canady (and Kaitlyn Terry)?

The framing of this question might seem a little strange since, in regionals, Rothrock put up better numbers than Canady.

The two-time National Pitcher of the Year allowed five runs in the 10-9 miraculous comeback win over Ole Miss. Canady's ERA, at 1.42, is higher than last year or the one before.

Rothrock, meanwhile, allowed two runs throughout all of regionals. The Red Raiders, though, don’t need Canady to be as dominant as years past. That’s because Kaitlyn Terry is on the squad.

The UCLA transfer holds a 1.39 ERA. She pitched eight innings in the Lubbock Regional and allowed three runs. The Gators, meanwhile, will need to go heavy with Rothrock in the postseason.

Of course, the junior proved she can handle that workload in the 2024 and 2025 runs. Plus, Florida still has one of the best offenses that can win in a multitude of ways.

Florida softball’s ability to go small ball or deep

In the region final vs. Georgia Tech, the Gators scored just five runs, but it was a masterful display of offensive balance.

Taylor Shumaker hit her 18th home run of the season, but Ava Brown, Townsen Thomas and Kenleigh Cahalan all laid down successful bunts in the 3-4-5 spots.

It’s something that Walton said the team practices often, and it creates a winning formula in the postseason.

“If you’re going to play behind the base, we’re good enough to bunt,” Walton said. “You got to play small ball. You got to take care of the ball. You got to make pitches when it counts. Sometimes, it’s hard to do.”

No player embodies this better than Thomas. The first team All-SEC redshirt freshman drove in 49 runs this season on 12 doubles, but she can also lay down a bunt better than anyone due to her speed.

Yellow Jackets coach Aileen Morales acknowledged the difficulty of preparing for that.

“Townsen, for example, she can beat you with a bunt. She can hit up all the gaps. She can run out of the park,” Morales said. “They have elite triple-threat offenses, and that’s hard to defend.”

The mystique (and elements) of Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium

The Gators, simply in recent history, don’t lose much at KSP in the postseason. Florida hasn’t lost a super regional at home since 2021 and only to Georgia since 2007.

Even though the afternoon starts annoy some fans, the Gator faithful will still come out in droves for a weekend that’s expected to break attendance records.

Those early starts bring an advantage too with the heat and humidity. Lubbock did reach the upper 90s for its regional this past weekend, and the Red Raiders did play super regionals last season in Tallahassee, but the daytime humidity is something no team can prepare for.

Except if you are Florida and practice in it all the time. Rothrock threw nearly 100 pitches Sunday vs. GT despite the temperature in the sun feeling well over 100 degrees.

“Our crowd likes big games,” Walton said. “They packed the Swamp for Morgan Wallen, so that’ll tell you they like big games and big moments, and they’re coming here.”

The Red Raiders 1-2 punch of Canady and Terry will pose challenges for the orange and blue, but Rothrock’s used to a heavy workload. She’ll excel once again in a big moment, and the Gators' offensive mix will lift them to their 14th Women’s College World Series. Give me UF in three.
