The Timberwolves added their first, legitimate power forward to the roster — it’s a more under-the-radar move than fans were likely hoping for Friday.
Minnesota agreed to a one-year deal with veteran forward Trey Lyles, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press. The Athletic first reported the agreement.
Lyles is a 10-year NBA veteran who played two years for current Wolves’ basketball boss Tim Connelly in Denver. Last season, Lyles played in Europe for Real Madrid, where he averaged nearly 13 points a game while shooting 42.1% from 3-point range.
The 30 year old marks Minnesota’s 12th agreed-to signing, a number that will likely jump to 13 when the Wolves eventually ink No. 33 overall pick Isaiah Evans to a deal.
Assuming Minnesota only rosters 14 players to open the season, that leaves one open spot remaining. The Timberwolves have reported interest in LeBron James and Rui Hachimura, either of whom would slot in as the starting power forward if signed.
