Both FIFA and the United Nations have released statements after Kylian Mbappé was subjected to vile racist abuse from a Paraguayan government official.

France's World Cup game against Paraguay was a heated affair, with players engaging in pushing and shoving as they sought every possible edge. Mbappé's penalty secured a 1-0 victory, but the win over such a physical opponent has been overshadowed by racism.

Having guided France past Paraguay, Mbappé became the target of racist remarks from Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, who has since accused him of "gender-based violence." The United Nations has now weighed in, condemning her comments and calling out racism in no uncertain terms, as per The Mirror US.

"The racist and dehumanizing remarks against French footballer Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla are despicable and, regrettably, not isolated," the statement began. "Reports of racist incidents during the FIFA World Cup 2026 reflect a wider phenomenon across football and sports more broadly.

"Public officials have a heightened responsibility to stand against racism, discrimination and hate speech in their discourse.

"States and sports organizations must actively work to prevent acts of racism and any other form of discrimination. They should also ensure that there are independent and effective accountability mechanisms in place. Social media companies also have a responsibility to prevent and address racial discrimination and xenophobic abuse on their platforms, in accordance with international human rights standards."

FIFA also issued a statement condemning the racism aimed at Mbappé. The FIFA Players' Voice Panel said the organization was "deeply disturbed" by the racist abuse the France captain has endured, declaring racism is "an attack on human dignity" that has no place in soccer, the World Cup, or society at large.

FIFA PVP Honorary Captain and soccer legend George Weah said: "We stand in complete solidarity with Kylian Mbappé and condemn this reprehensible abuse in the strongest possible terms. Football must always be a game of respect, inclusion, and unity.

"There can be zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind. Our message is clear: racism is never part of the game. It's a crime."

Amarilla's disgraceful remarks stemmed from Mbappé's actions - or inaction - toward Paraguay. More specifically, the 27-year-old declined to shake Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill's hand after the match, triggering a wave of abuse directed at him.

"This brute hasn't even learned to write. Instead of breastmilk, he grew up sucking on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever heard were chimpanzees," Amarilla said. "You should've given him the middle finger, Orlando Gill.

"A colonized Cameroonian, pretending to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly. He was nervous and scared to death all game, like his whole team. They didn't even manage to score a single goal, until they got lucky with a penalty. The only thing many of us blame the team for is not giving him a full-handed slap at the end of the game. I'm not even a football fan."

Mbappé and France are scheduled to face Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals in Boston on Thursday, July 9.
