One of the unintentionally hilarious aspects of the upcoming World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico is the idea of world-class international soccer players staying in the most random of small-to-medium-sized American cities.
That's exactly what we're seeing as teams start to arrive for this week's tournament.
Ahead of the World Cup, FIFA gave teams the option to choose from 62 approved base camps spread throughout the U.S. (with some options in Canada and Mexico). And while teams had the ability to choose to stay at a Four Seasons or other luxury hotels in major cities, many have opted to prioritize privacy at high school or college facilities in towns over populated city centers.
Spain will have its first two World Cup matches in Atlanta. But rather than staying at a luxury hotel and training at an approved facility in Atlanta, Spain chose ... Chattanooga, Tennessee?!
This World Cup is so unique that its has Lamine Yamal staying at an Embassy Suites in Chattanooga. And yes, the Baylor School — which is hosting Spain — has incredible facilities. But that doesn't make this whole base camp selection any less hilarious.
Fans couldn't get enough of the scene in Chattanooga. It was too good.

folks having a giggle about this but i rather europeans see the beauty of southern appalachia and breathe its crisp air than stay in most of our horribly designed big cities. https://t.co/451ncs9COt
