Faneca a no-show at Steelers practice

Tuesday, May 22, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers guard Alan Faneca did not show up today for the first of 14 voluntary workout session scheduled for the next few weeks.

Faneca, unhappy with his contract, lashed out at Steelers management at the opening of the team's mandatory mini-camp May 12, then sat out the next day's morning practice. He participated in two more practice sessions.

Before flying home to Louisiana, he said he would not return until training camp starts July 23 -- if he's still a Steeler then. He has asked to be traded. The practices now under way at the Steelers' South Side facility are officially termed organized team activities. Unlike minicamp, however, those are not mandatory and players cannot be disciplined if they do not attend.

Supposing this issue goes farther and the Steelers decide to move Faneca.

Are we in a position to bid for him in a trade given that we're hearing we may have to cut veterans to clear caproom for the rookies?

I don't think that we are.

I hope he doesn't piss the Steelers off so bad that they end up trading him this season to someone elso other than us. I think he should just play out his contract with the Steelers.

It is just voluntary camp. He doesn't have to show up. Faneca doesn't want to be a steeler anymore and I understand why. Faneca is trying to get himself traded. No better way than to get yourself traded then publicy admitting you don't want to be a steeler and not showing up for practice. Keep up the good work Faneca. You will soon be a cardinal. I just wonder if the cardinals are going to be cutting veterans so they can make room to trade for Faneca.

Cujo? Are you saying Faneca plays like a rabid dog?

:D

I guess I'm subtly pointing out that those who aren't concerned that we're
suddenly up against the cap because of the contracts we signed recently,
might feel differently if we wound up missing out on a guy like Faneca because we can't fit him under the cap.

Could any of those roster bonuses be converted to signing bonuses if need be?

We could trade one of our G's for him as we'd have to cut one anyways because of the glut of G's we already have and the salary issues....

M. Brown/6th (conditional 5th) for Faneca?

if the Cards put together a strange package they could get him.

They'd need to be creative getting contracts changed. Some inventive minds could get it done.

Seattle's also interested in him....we better be careful of that.

Seattle does what it takes to get the guy they want. It would be bad news if Seattle does get Faneca. The Cardinals need to step up to get Faneca.
