The most electrifying Auburn basketball player in recent memory is on the move.
ESPN's Shams Charania reports that former Auburn forward Johni Broome has been traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Los Angeles Clippers. Broome, along with a second-round draft pick, is heading to Los Angeles for cash considerations in the wake of the 76ers' recent free agent acquisition of LeBron James.
The 76ers planned to waive Broome shortly after signing LeBron to free up cap space. Broome completed one year of his four-year, $8.6 million contract with the 76ers organization, and the 76ers plan to use the free space, plus the cash involved in the Broome trade, to create a new deal with guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Broome was a solid player at Auburn, but his NBA/G-League splits suggest he needs more time to develop into a quality NBA player. Broome averaged 33 minutes over 18 games with the Delaware Blue Crabs of the G-League, where he averaged 22.9 points and eight rebounds per game. However, he was not quite as dominant at the premier level of the Association. He played only 11 regular-season games for Philadelphia and connected on just 16.7% of his field goal attempts.
Broome, in his second professional season, will get a fresh start with a new organization in hopes of improving his career trajectory. He will do so in the same city as fellow Auburn alum Walker Kessler, who was traded to the cross-town rival Lakers this offseason.
