The Cincinnati Bengals made massive waves this offseason by trading for All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, and franchise quarterback Joe Burrow is already feeling the aftershocks in training camp.

Instead of getting comfortable in the pocket, Burrow is facing an entirely new challenge during practice: trying to see over a 6-foot-4, 340-pound mountain.

During a recent sit-down with Evan Washburn on NFL on CBS, Burrow opened up about the adjustment required when dealing with his new teammate daily.

“I was talking the other day, I threw an interception on one of the first days and I was saying, Dex is just so big, he makes throwing over the middle just a little bit more difficult,” Burrow told Washburn. “Just because of how big and imposing he is. You have to slide right, slide left just to be able to see around him.”

Burrow knows a thing or two about making quick decisions. Despite missing time with a toe injury during the 2025 NFL season, the signal-caller still managed to throw for 1,809 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions. However, even an elite processor like Burrow must alter his mechanics when Lawrence collapses the middle of the offensive line.

Lawrence brings an undeniably dominant presence to Cincinnati’s defense. Even in a slightly down 2025 campaign where he recorded just 0.5 sacks and 14 combined tackles for the New York Giants, opposing offenses double-teamed him on over 71 percent of his pass-rush snaps. Now, he gets to unleash that power against his own team in practice.

For the Bengals, this iron-sharpens-iron mentality is exactly what they need. Burrow and the rest of the offense are being forced to speed up their internal clocks and find creative throwing lanes. If Burrow can master throwing around a roadblock as massive as Lawrence in August, carving up opposing defenses will feel incredibly easy this upcoming regular season.
