The Houston Texans seem to have one of the more complete rosters entering 2026 among AFC contenders. Even their depth seems to be filled to the brim, with few questions about whether a backup could fight for first-team reps.
So, which backup on offense could end up being the best name to watch for this fall on offense?
What about defense?
ESPN recently revealed its all-backup team for 2026, headlined by 2026 No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza and Steelers No. 2 running back Kenneth Gainwell. The criteria? Build a full roster filled with only backup players who could find their way into making an ideal 33rd roster in the pros for the upcoming season.
With Houston, backup right tackle Trent Brown was listed as the top option on the outside for the rebuilding franchise, with Jacksonville's Walker Little as the option on the left side of the line.
Signed to a veteran minimum deal, Brown ended up starting at right tackle once Houston shifted Tytus Howard inside to guard. He's a quality third option who could start in a pinch, but given his injury history, it's hard to envision the veteran right tackle staying stable on the outside against several elite pass rushers for a full 17-game season.
As for depth at linebacker, Barnwell put rookie Aiden Fisher as a top name to watch for. A former team captain for the Hoosiers, Fisher could be the breakout star of training camp.
