When we talked to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing at the NFL Combine, just a little after he was hired for the job, he marveled at the weapons at his disposal.

“There’s a lot of different directions you can take it in,” Petzing said. “Ultimately, whatever we do, we want to be very hard to defend, and we want to make sure our best players affect the game. And you know, the nice part in Detroit is we have a lot of those. Being able to move those guys around the formation, put them in different situations, and not be predictable to a defense, I think is going to be so critical to our success.”

The excitement for Detroit’s offensive weapons doesn’t end with the team or even local fans. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell published a 1-32 ranking of the best collective WR, RB, and TE rooms in the NFL, and the Lions came in at the very top of his list, up from No. 2 last year and No. 7 in 2024.

Barnwell gushes over each position group for the Lions. He raved that Jahmyr Gibbs “was able to maintain elite efficiency as a rusher and a receiver despite a struggling offensive line.” He called Amon-Ra St. Brown’s 1,400-yard season “another high-end campaign” and noted that Jameson Williams “solidified his status as one of the league’s best No. 2 wideouts.” Finally, while he noted Sam LaPorta hasn’t improved upon his ridiculous rookie season, he is “entirely capable of being one of the league’s most efficient tight ends on a route-by-route basis.”

Barnwell does admit that they may have gotten worse on the margins, though. He noted the downgrade from David Montgomery to Isiah Pacheco and Detroit’s lack of depth at receiver beyond Isaac TeSlaa.

Still, that wasn’t enough to keep them out of the top spot.

In case you were wondering, here’s where the rest of the NFC North ranked:

  • Packers: 17th
  • Bears: 15th
  • Vikings: 8th
