This season, Tahlequah boys soccer has developed a trend that they are admittedly trying to end.
Three times this season, the Tigers have found themselves in a deficit early and had to claw back for a win.
Coach Greg Hall is happy his team walks away with wins, but wants to see some better starts going forward.
In the Sapulpa Tournament a couple of weeks ago, the Tigers fell 2-0 early to Christian Heritage but came back for a 3-2 win.
“We continued a trend; we started off down 2-0 and came back and won. That was the third game we were down and came back from,” Hall said. “We don’t want to be down, but it shows me that if we are down early, we will fight to the end.”

In their next game, the Tigers faced off against the East Central Cardinals – a team that has proved it doesn’t want to fall behind early.
The Tigers faced them in the finals of the Sapulpa Tournament and lost 4-0.
Even though the Tigers lost, it gave Hall a chance to look at one of the top teams in the district outside of official District play.
Now the Cardinals and Tigers are set up for a rematch on THS turf Tuesday, April 8.
“It gave us an opportunity to see what East Central was like; we played them in the final,” Hall said. “If we go in with a different game plan, the results will go our way. East Central is one of those teams you can’t get down; it is like an avalanche. The first five or 10 minutes are important. We have to get settled quickly and hand on for a battle tomorrow night.”
A win against the Cardinals could spell big things for Tahlequah.
“If we get a good result tomorrow against East Central, it should set us up to finish with a good district record,” Hall said. “If we get that win tomorrow night, everything we have as a goal is still in front of us. That is the most important thing.”
The Tigers may have fallen in their matchup against East Central, but they won the last two contests. Tuesday, April 1, the Tigers took down McLain in a hard-fought 4-3 win.
Later in the week, the Tigers shut out Midwest City, 5-0. A goal to start out the game made a big difference and set the tone early.
Theron Ward led the way with a pair of goals. Even though the Tigers had four players score five goals, Hall felt they missed some scoring chances.
“This year, I think our success is the boys buying in; everyone is contributing,” Hall said. “We don’t have a singular person. Our defense does well, and lots of guys are scoring. It is a total team effort.”
A win over East Central opens up the Tigers into the thick of their District season.
Right now, the Tigers are one of the top teams in the district at the end of non-district play.
With an 8-3 record, only the Cardinals have as many wins and only two teams have a better record.
East Central (8-0-1) and Tulsa-Memorial (7-1) are the only teams to win at a higher rate this season.
“We are developing nicely right now, the chemistry is way better than it’s ever been,” Hall said. “Winning some games early has helped that. The guys are buying in, so we are going to keep doing the stuff we are doing. We are trying to stay healthy and have our best finish for a couple of seasons.”
Lady Tigers dominate
In their battle with Midwest City, the Lady Tigers won in dominant fashion.
Friday, April 4, the Lady Tigers won a 10-0 contest on the road. Emma Fields picked up four goals, while Addi Chuculate picked up three scores. Samata Santana, Madden Kissinger and Lorelie Espioza each scored a goal.
The Tahlequah teams are back in action with the Lady Tigers playing at 5 p.m. and the Tigers starting roughly at 7 p.m. at home vs. East Central Tuesday, April 8.
Later in the week, THS face off against Tulsa Memorial Friday, April 11.
