WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana — Lake Central junior right fielder Emma Wilkins left no doubt.
With her help, so did the Indians.
Wilkins crushed a grand slam to left field on the first pitch of her at-bat in the third inning as Lake Central rolled past Terre Haute North 9-2 in the Class 4A state championship game at Purdue’s Bittinger Stadium on Friday night.
It was the sixth homer of the season for Wilkins, a St. Ambrose recruit who batted seventh in a loaded lineup that finished with 74 home runs.
Senior second baseman MaKayla Van Vossen, a DePaul recruit, helped set the tone when she led off the first inning with her sixth homer of the season for the top-ranked Indians (31-2), who won their first state title since 2004 and fourth overall in their first appearance in the championship game since 2021.
Senior third baseman Tegan Tripp, a Virgina Tech recruit batting cleanup, then lined a homer to center to lead off the fourth. That first-pitch homer was her 12th of the season, and she finished 3-for-4.
Junior pitcher Maddie Such, a Kentucky recruit, contained No. 10 Terre Haute North (30-2), allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk and struck out seven. She also contributed a run-scoring single.
Junior catcher Madi Wainwright, an Indiana recruit, added a run-scoring single, and junior center fielder Piper Urbanski hit a sacrifice fly.
Lake Central coach Yvette Tovar, a 2003 graduate of the school, added another state title to her resume. She started in right field on both the state championship team in 2002 and the runner-up team the following season.
