EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Locomotive FC bounced back from last week’s road loss against FC Tulsa, returning home to secure a 2-0 shutout victory against Sporting JAX on Saturday night, July 25.
The Locos stuck early in the first half. In the 15th minute, while dep in the attacking third, Gabriel Torres delivered an out-swinging cross into the box. Rubio Rubin’s initial header ricocheted off the crossbar, but Amando Moreno was there to capitalize on the rebound, burying it in the back of the net to give the Locos a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, Sporting Jax drew a penalty after Gabriel Torres was whistled for a tackle inside the box. However, Abraham Romero, stepping in as starting goalkeeper following Sebastian Mora-Mora’s injury, made a key save to maintain the 1-0 advantage at the half.
The Locos would go on to seal the match late in the second half. In the 83th minute, the Locos forced a turnover in the opponent’s half of the field. Eric Calvillo sent a perfectly timed through ball to Rubio Rubin, who on a one-on-one against the keeper, executed a step-over and netted the Locos’ second goal to put the game away.
The 2-0 result marked the Locos’ first league victory at home since April 4 against Las Vegas Lights FC, in the USL Championship.
The Locos returns to action on the road Saturday, August 1, at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California, when they take on Orange County SC. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Mountain Time.
