The San Francisco 49ers needed to make some upgrades on their offensive line, but they skipped that box on their offseason to-do list and kicked the can down the road another year.
A way-too-early 2026 mock draft from Pro Football Focus has the 49ers finally using a first-round pick on an offensive lineman for the first time since they selected offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey No. 9 overall in the 2018 draft.
Their choice at No. 26 overall in the early projection is Iowa offensive tackle Gennings Dunker (real name). He's listed at 6-5, 316 pounds. Barring his arms being unacceptably short he has the right size to play tackle in the NFL.
Dunker struggled out of the gate at Iowa in 2022, but he put together a nice year in 2023 and broke out in 2024 when he posted a 90.2 run blocking grade at PFF. He also checked in with a strong 76.2 pass blocking grade. If he continues his ascension in his final college season, there's a very good chance he doesn't last until the 26th pick in next year's draft.
Our friends at the Draft Wire also issued a way-too-early mock where the 49ers once again address the defensive line with Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks. He has 53 pressures and six sacks across the last two seasons. If one of the 49ers' three defensive line selections in this year's class don't pan out, it's easy to see them going back to the DL well once again next year.
