Eagles’ Lane Johnson makes Jason Kelce admission after revealing potential retirement decision

Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson revealed he might retire after the 2026-27 NFL season.

The 36-year-old has been with the Eagles his entire 13-year NFL career so far, and the likelihood of next season being his last has grown exponentially since he discussed the same on Saturday.

After revealing that he’s considering retirement after next season, Johnson discussed a recently-retired Jason Kelce while talking about the team going into the 2026 season.

After revealing that this season might be his last, Johnson’s mind went to former teammate Kelce, who retired after the 2023-24 NFL season. Johnson admitted Kelce would have loved being on the current iteration of the team as well.

“Yeah, I think Kelce would have loved this offense. I think he would have f——, I think he would have done really well in this offense. But I don’t think that would entice him into coming back any sooner.”


Kelce was in attendance in the press room when Johnson was discussing this, reiterating that the 38-year-old six-time All-Pro will not be returning to the line of scrimmage again.

Kelce missed out on winning the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2025 due to his retirement and wasn’t tempted to return then, and it’s unlikely he would consider it again.

The Eagles replaced Kelce at center with Cam Jurgens, who has since become a Super Bowl-winning All-Pro player.

New Eagles OC Sean Mannion has built an offensive scheme with more under-center snaps and wide-zone running, which would have fit Kelce’s strengths.

Kelce had an 80.5 overall PFF grade and an 86.0 run-blocking grade in his final season, retiring at an elite level. If he were willing to put his body on the line for another season, he would have won a second Super Bowl.

Jurgens is still an elite option, as he proved in the Super Bowl-winning season. He just has to keep his head above water under the new offense to ensure the Eagles can have another successful season.
