Draymond Green reveals if he wants Steve Kerr back as Warriors coach originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Golden State Warriors need a plan as Steve Kerr reaches the end of his deal. Recent talks and new job offers have led to many questions about the team. Draymond Green has now shared his thoughts on what will happen next.
Green recently reversed his stance on Steve Kerr's future, expressing optimism that the longtime head coach will return to the Golden State Warriors for the 2026-27 season. This is a big change from April 2026. At that time, Green said it "felt like the end" after the team lost their last game to the Phoenix Suns.
Kerr’s record-breaking extension, signed in 2024, is set to expire this summer, leaving his future technically undecided as of May 7.
Kerr has held multiple positive meetings with owner Joe Lacob and GM Mike Dunleavy. While no final decision has been announced, reports suggest the Warriors are increasingly operating under the assumption that he will stay.
ESPN is reportedly "aggressively pursuing" Kerr to return to broadcasting if he decides to step away from the bench.
Kerr has consistently stated he does not want to walk away while Stephen Curry is still playing, provided their organizational goals remain aligned.
Draymond Green wants Steve Kerr back
Appearing on ESPN's Inside the NBA on May 6, 2026, Green clarified his earlier pessimistic comments, stating, "I think and hope he's coming back... I do know, he wants to coach. So if he wants to coach, I think he comes back."

Despite this public support, Green also recently made headlines for stating that Kerr's system may have "hindered" his own offensive development earlier in his career. He explained that the media turned a four-minute tribute to Kerr into a 15-second soundbite about a single "gripe".
