A position of depth in the 2026 NFL draft could make it all the more likely that the Jacksonville Jaguars address a sneaky positional need in the early rounds.

According to Adam Schefter, the depth of this year's tight end class has the attention of some NFL teams, particularly in the middle rounds.

"This draft has the chance to produce more middle-round values, with some teams saying this is one of the deeper tight end classes in years," wrote Schefter. ..."Teams will have plenty of interest in players such as Vanderbilt's Eli Stowers, Ohio State's Max Klare and NC State's Justin Joly down the board."

Potentially, the Jaguars could be one of those teams interested in adding a tight end.

ESPN's Jordan Reid wrote recently that tight end is one of the positions that the Jaguars are "expected to target right away on Day 2."

In the short-term lens of the 2026 season, tight end isn't a major need. Under contract for the Jaguars are Brenton Strange, Quintin Morris, and Hunter Long -- although, at a minimum, depth is needed with only four tight ends on the roster currently, including Patrick Herbert.

That said, the NFL draft is also about planning ahead, and looking ahead to 2027, Mundt and Long are both free agents, as is Strange; however, the expectation is that he will be back.

A draft pick used on a rookie would give that player the opportunity to take on more of a developmental role, or perhaps that prospect could even push Long for playing time.

Also, with the Jaguars releasing Johnny Mundt, there is a roster spot open at tight end as well.

So, while many mock drafts have a heavy emphasis on the Jaguars addressing the defensive side of the ball on Day 2, maybe earmark one of those four draft picks for the tight end position.
