Tom Bischof has had quite an interesting year.

One of the top prospects in Germany was signed by Bayern Munich in what could turn out to be one of Bayern’s best bit of business this decade. Unfortunately, Bischof has been kept relatively sidelined for the majority of the season further back in the depth charts for midfielders and wingers under Vincent Kompany. Despite the lack of playtime, Bischof has taken full advantage of his opportunities.

Most recently, Bischof has emerged as an interesting option at left-back for the club, which is not exactly a position the German national team has significant depth in. In an odd twist of fate, could Bischof emerge as a left-back option for Nagelsmann at the World Cup?

It’s not unthinkable that Bischof could get the call-up. Bischof can play virtually anywhere in the midfield, and has proved his worth at the left-back position thus far. David Raum is clearly Nagelsmann’s pick for the past year but it wouldn’t be unlike Nagelsmann to make a major adjustment like this one.

Bischof also has the advantage of versatility over other options such as David Raum or Nathaniel Brown. While this is all speculation, the real test of validity here is whether or not Bischof gets a call-up in March. Bischof has been excellent at the U-21 level, and Bischof actually got senior minutes last summer at the Nations League 3rd place final against France.

While Bischof has fallen out of sorts with the national team for the time being, he will continue to be rumored to get another opportunity so long as he continues his increasing playtime under Vincent Kompany. We all know the talent is there, so why not give the kid a call?

Well, news broke yesterday that Bischof will be left off the squad:

So…is Tom Bischof’s lack of playing time working against him? If he was playing regularly in the central midfield at Bayern Munich would he have a better chance to get called up? Those are some things to consider as you ponder the question — Does Bayern Munich’s Tom Bischof deserve to be called up to Germany?
