Dodgers' Alex Vesia reveals heartfelt meaning behind post-save gesture originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Alex Vesia was pointing to a group of special people after recording his 15th overall and second save of the season on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed reliever struck out the New York Mets' sluggers in order in the ninth inning, winning the game 2-1. Jorge Polanco, Bo Bichette and Francisco Alvarez failed to put the ball in play against Vesia, who turned 30th on Tuesday.
In his post-game interview, Vesia revealed that he and his wife, Kayla, invited their late daughter's medical staff, including nurses and staff members, to the game. The reliever was showing his gratitude towards them with his post-game gesture.
"Tonight my wife and I have put together all the nurses and staff that had helped us through one of the you know, the hardest times of our lives. There were 27-30 nurses and doctors and you know, we just wanted to give back to them because they've helped us out more ways than one."

What happened to Alex Vesia's daughter?
Alex Vesia and Kayla suffered a massive loss when the Dodgers were in the middle of their 2025 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Dodgers informed the fanbase that Vesia was going to miss the World Series to attend a "deeply personal family matter." At the time, nobody was aware about what was going on with Vesia.
Only in November, days after welcoming their daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, the couple shared that their daughter had passed away on Oct. 26. However, the family chose not to reveal the exact cause of death. In February, Vesia addressed his daughter's loss.
“I was not prepared to not bring my baby girl home, but we’re carrying her with us every day…” he said.
It was the hardest time of their lives, and with his performance on Tuesday night, Vesia made another effort to make her daughter proud.
