Michael Block will not make the cut at the 2026 PGA Championship, but if his detractors think they might finally be rid of him, they might have another think comin'.
"I have to be honest with you — there’s no way on God’s green earth this is my last one," Block told SiriusXM golf host Jason Sobel on Friday. "No chance. I will definitely qualify for one more, if not five more."
The ever-confident and always colorful Block entered the second round just three shots off the lead after an impressive showing Thursday, which saw him "dissect" Aronimink Golf Club to the tune of an even-par 70. He did not meet such fortunes Friday, though, when windy conditions and brutal pin locations wreaked havoc on players in the early wave of tee times. Block shot 5-over 75.
As of 3:30 p.m. ET Friday, DataGolf lists 4 over as having an 83 percent chance of being the final cutline and 3 over at 16.5 percent, meaning Block and the rest of the group at 5 over — which includes the likes of PGA Tour stars Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre and Akshay Bhatia — will almost certainly be watching the weekend's action from home.
Four straight pars to start and a birdie at No. 5 got Block to 2 under and within one of the leaders. For a brief moment Friday morning, it seemed there would most definitely be a "Block Party" in eastern Pennsylvania this weekend.
That notion was dispelled when Block made bogeys at Nos. 6, 8 and 11 and a double-bogey at the long par-3 14th. He made birdie at No. 16 to sneak back inside the projected cut line, but back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes did him in. He has not made the cut at the PGA Championship since his magical run to a T-15 finish in 2023.
This was the fifth consecutive year that Block — the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California — qualified for the PGA Championship. He did so by finishing inside the top 20 at the PGA Professional Championship at Bandon Dunes late last month, where he told Golfweek he would probably "get his ass handed to him" at Aronimink. That was true of his last 12 holes on Friday, but aside from that, the 49-year-old held his own.
And as he told Sobel, he fully believes he will be back next year. And the year after that. And the year after that.
