In line with his career, Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi’s educational journey has been anything but ordinary. And as the World Cup takes the international stage, plenty of fans have one similar question: where did Messi go to school?
The answer begins at the public primary school General Las Heras in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, where he got his start playing for the youth division of hometown club Newell’s Old Boys.

Messi's athletic potential quickly became apparent, and the Argentine star moved from Rosario to Barcelona at 13 to join La Masia, the storied youth academy of FC Barcelona. There, he was enrolled at Leon XII, a private school in Barcelona’s Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, where he earned a high school diploma equivalent through a special program for academy members.
Young Messi did have quite a few other things on his mind – he made his official professional debut for Barcelona in 2004 at just 17 years old, playing just seven minutes in the game that would become legendary for Messi fans. He went on to a 21-year career with the club.
He is currently playing with the Argentine national team in the group stage of the World Cup, making history Tuesday as the oldest player to score a World Cup hat trick during Argentina's opener against Algeria, but stars at Inter Miami CF in Miami, FL, for most of the year. He’s making sure that his three young sons follow in his footsteps – all three attend the prestigious Miami Country Day School while training with Inter Miami’s youth development program.
