Diamondbacks predicted to explore trade options for $22 million All-Star, Cy Young candidate before deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are now in a three-way tie for second place in the NL West, and might enter into a graveyard spiral if one too many injured occur. With that in mind, the DBacks might need to think about who’d they sell at the trade deadline to maximize the assets they could get.

One of those players is Zac Gallen, who FanSided’s Christopher Kline predicts Arizona will look to flip at the deadline, as he only signed on for another year.

“Arizona's offense has stalled early in the campaign and the pitching staff might have trouble staying in one piece (again), at least until Corbin Burnes can return around the All-Star break. Nobody knows, in truth, what state the Diamondbacks season will be in by that point.Gallen has spent almost eight full years in Arizona, showing real loyalty this past offseason. Baseball is a business at the end of the day, however, and trading Gallen before he can test the open market again is hardly illogical. He has the reputation and the pitch mix to really appeal to a contender looking for postseason-caliber depth. Arizona should probably explore its options,” Kline wrote.

So far this season, Gallen has posted a 1-1 record, a 3.00 ERA, nine strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.333 over 15 innings pitched. He’s also been a Cy Young candidate multiple times in the past, and has been an All-Star.

His contract is a one-year, $22 million deal, so whoever wants him has to be prepared for him to be a two-to-three month rental.

Hopefully, the DBacks stay as contenders for the season, and Gallen gets to ride out his entire contract with the team he’s been with for his entire career. Otherwise, he might be getting put on the trade block by Arizona.
