The Arizona Diamondbacks and Corbin Burnes haven't gotten off to an ideal start to their time together, and there's still a lot of contract to go.

It's a little complicated, though, because Burnes' current deal also has a built-in opt-out, if he wants to take it.

MLB Trade Rumors' Darragh McDonald broke it down in a new article, and he explains that after this season, Burnes can opt-out of a contract that would have four years and $140 million remaining on it.

Given that Burnes is out with injury right now as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, that's far from a certainty.

But if Burnes comes back and looks good, maybe it's an option.

Regardless, it's a bit complicated for everyone. There are a wide variety of possible outcomes for Burnes' future.

"For Burnes to make this a conversation, he’ll probably need to come back and shove for at least a few weeks," McDonald writes. "One or two starts in September won’t do it. It’s also worth considering that Burnes seemingly turned down larger offers from other clubs because he and his family live in Scottsdale. Even if he thinks there’s a chance of slightly more money out there, he might be happy where he is."

McDonald does point out that Blake Snell and Jacob deGrom have both gotten recent deals that have beaten the remaining money on Burnes' contract.

He's right, though. If Burnes doesn't return and look healthy, it won't matter. There'd be no way he'd opt out of such a big contract if his health was a future question mark, because he might leave a lot of money on the table.

The Diamondbacks might not mind Burnes opting out, though. They'd be able to get a do-over on spending some of that cash.
