The New Jersey Devils have inked their captain of Nico Hischier to a five-year contract extension worth $58,500,000 ($11,700,000 average annual value), which will begin with the 2027-28 season.
General Manager Sunny Mehta made the announcement at noon EST on the afternoon of July 1 — when the new League Year officially started. Hischier had only one more year left on his former seven-year contract ($7,250,000), of which he signed in Oct., 2019. Hischier tallied 18 multi-point games last season, the second-most he’s had in a single NHL season (20 in 2022-23). As a result of his new deal, Hischier is now the highest paid player in Devils' history and tied for longest tenured player in New Jersey.
Mehta said it is one of his priorities to make sure Hischier remains a leader for the Devils for many years to come.
“When I took this job, I knew that Nico was one of the core pieces that I definitely wanted as part of our future,” said Mehta per the Devils' press release. “The way he plays the game, his leadership, and selflessness are qualities we value for this team. We all look forward to him leading this franchise, on and off the ice, for years to come.”
Devils, Nico Hischier agree to terms on contract extension
Hischier, 27, completed his ninth NHL season with New Jersey since he debuted with the organization at Prudential Center in 2017. The center tallied 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists) and was one of five members of the Devils' roster to play in all 82 regular-season games last season — throughout 2025-26.

The captain also led the Devils with 11 power-play goals in 2025-26 — at the time of the announcement, he was 22 and thus New Jersey's second-youngest player to be named captain. He was originally selected at No. 1 overall by New Jersey in the 2017 NHL Draft.
On his international resume, Hischier was named captain of Switzerland at the 2025 World Championship and served as an alternate captain for his country at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, marking his first appearance at the Olympics.
Hischier is the 12th player in the history of New Jersey to wear the coveted "C" for the franchise. He has appeared in over 600 career NHL games (609) and posted 488 points across 199 goals and 289 assists.
