There was an unusual sight at Detroit Red Wings practice: Moritz Seider on the ice, in street clothes.

The team's top defenseman and all-around work horse was not part of practice on Friday, Dec. 19, ahead of a home-and-home the Wings have this weekend with the Washington Capitals.

Travis Hamonic skated in Seider's spot opposite Simon Edvinsson.

MORE WINGS: Detroit Red Wings must figure out this key aspect – and fast

Forward Patrick Kane, who missed the last two games with an upper-body injury, was on the ice for start of practice but left after a few minutes.

There'll be more on this developing story, but it'd be quite something for Seider to miss a game.

Seider has never missed a game since entering the NHL in 2021-22, playing the full 82 games in each of his first four seasons.

One example: On the morning of April 9, 2024, as the Wings had a home game against the Washington Capitals (who they were battling with for a playoff sport), Seider was dealing with a flu bug that had made its way through the team, sidelining several of his teammates.

Seider missed the morning skate — but come evening, he was suited up in his red and white No. 53.

"I had a rough night, I was in the hospital the next morning, but we sorted things out and I was ready to go," Seider said a couple days after the season ended. "I want to play for that team, and I want to play for that locker room, and I think everyone else would have done the same thing.

"If I’m not injured, I want to play."
