Derek Carr has been out of the spotlight while dealing with a newly-reported shoulder injury, but the New Orleans Saints quarterback has remained a hot topic of discussion. On Thursday, just before the start of the 2025 NFL draft, his brother and former pro quarterback David Carr shared some insight to Carr's situation from the NFL Network stage. The latest update said that, essentially, there was no update. Carr's camp was unable to provide any clarity on his status before the Saints turned their attention to the start of the draft.
"I promise you there's no one who would want to know that more than Derek," the elder Carr said. "The Saints have been aware of this shoulder injury since the moment that it happened. Derek really believes it happened in the game where he broke his wrist. And after the adrenaline wears off, you don't really throw, he didn't really throw a ball at game-level tempo after that because he was trying to get back from that injury. So by the time they were able to go throw the ball again, it was still there. The shoulder was still bothering him. So then you start to go through, 'Okay, what do we have to do to get it right?'"
It's been previously reported that Carr believed this shoulder issue stemmed from a 2023 AC joint strain he suffered against the Green Bay Packers. Maybe that hit in the 2024 New York Giants game reaggravated it. Either way, Carr's brother defended his absence from the team's voluntary workout program and tried to frame his mentality going into the summer.
Carr continued: "It doesn't really matter if you're on the field in April, it matters that you can be there for Week 1. As a veteran player that's what you're trying to do. And you understand also at the same time there's a draft, you have to know what's happening. Trust me, he's working with the Saints, he's working with Mickey, they're trying to try to find the best way forward. Surgery is a possibility. Not-surgery is a possibility. And that's what Derek would prefer, 'Let me just rehab this thing and let me get out there and make it go.' But you don't know yet and he's trying to find the answers. I wish I had them."
It's far from ideal, but the Saints need to operate as if Carr has already thrown his last football in their colors. Second-year backup Spencer Rattler has taken on a leadership role at these early voluntary workouts in Metairie. The team is positioned to draft another young passer early in this year's event; first-year head coach Kellen Moore was always going to get his own guys in the QB room, but a vacancy at the top of the depth chart speeds up that process. We'll see what they do when the first round kicks off on Thursday night.
