May 21—The Dayton Flyers will play a charity exhibition game against a high-profile program for a fourth straight season.

Notre Dame will be the opponent on Oct. 17 at UD Arena at a time to be announced, UD announced on Thursday, May 21. The game will take place a little more than three weeks before Nov. 10, the first day college basketball teams can play regular-season games in the 2026-27 season.

Notre Dame will join Ohio State, Xavier and Penn State on the list of teams Dayton has played to benefit Jay's Light, the foundation started to honor the late daughter of Dayton coach Anthony Grant and his wife Chris.

According to a press release, Jay's Light supports "local community organizations and initiatives that align with the mission of supporting adolescent and young adult mental health."

CareSource has sponsored each game.

Chris and I continue to be encouraged and energized by the generosity of those who believe in this mission," Grant said in a press release. "CareSource has stood beside us as a cornerstone partner from the beginning, championing mental health initiatives in ways that have truly transformed lives across our community and beyond. The other games, the new programming for young people we bring to UD Arena, we keep finding more ways to make a difference. We are grateful to Notre Dame and CareSource for this year's programming."

"We are honored to partner with Coach Grant, the University of Dayton, and CareSource for this tremendous event," said Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry in a press release. "What makes this event special is what it represents beyond the game itself. Mental health is something that touches every team, every locker room, every campus, and every community. We must continue creating conversations, raising awareness and helping improve access to the resources people need. College basketball gives us a platform to impact people beyond wins and losses, and we're proud to be a part of something that can make a difference."

Dayton and Notre Dame played regularly — often twice in a season — throughout the 1970s and 1980s and into the 1990s, but they have not played since 1995 when Dayton beat Notre Dame 73-63 at UD Arena.

Notre Dame leads the series 28-13. That total includes four games played between 1908 and 1921.

In the modern era, Dayton is 10-8 against Notre Dame at UD Arena and 0-17 in South Bend. Dayton also won one game on a neutral court, beating Notre Dame in the NIT in 1968 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The series ended when Notre Dame joined the Big East Conference in 1995. It spent 18 seasons in the Big East before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013.

The decision to end the series was Notre Dame's.

"It's certainly nothing against Dayton," Notre Dame coach John MacLeod said in 1995. "The Dayton-Notre Dame series has been a great series. Dayton has a great basketball tradition. It's a great basketball town. Those fans are tremendous there.

We are changing our approach with regard to how we are going to set up our non-conference schedule. We're trying to do what other schools have done — develop a home non-conference schedule. We're trying to do what will give us an opportunity to get into the NCAA (Tournament). All the schools we've been playing want to play home and home.. We can't play, in our opinion, 18 Big East games and turn around and have five non-conference games at home and four on the road or vice versa."

Notre Dame is entering the fourth season with Shrewsberry. The Fighting Irish finished 13-18 last season. They have suffered four straight losing seasons. They last played in the NCAA tournament in 2022.

Seven Notre Dame players entered the transfer portal this year, including three double-digit scorers: Markus Burton; Jalen Haralson; and Cole Certa. Notre Dame picked up five players, including Winthrop's Logan Duncomb, a top-100 transfer in 2026, according to ESPN.

Dayton is 1-2 in charity exhibition games.

In 2023, Ohio State pulled away in the final 10 minutes for a 78-70 victory. It was the first meeting between the programs since the NCAA tournament in 2014.

In 2024, in front of another sellout crowd at UD Arena, Xavier took control of the game late in the first half and never let Dayton make a serious run in the second half en route to a 98-74 victory. It was the first meeting between the former Atlantic 10 Conference rivals since 2015.

In 2025, Dayton dominated the second half and beat Penn State 78-62.
