Dave Portnoy defends Caitlin Clark after her answer on Sophie Cunningham controversy

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has reacted to Caitlin Clark’s comments when pressed for an answer on the debate of trans athletes in women’s sports.

Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham has stirred the pot on a worldwide debate on trans athletes in women’s sports by advocating that biological males be kept away from athletic spaces for biological women.

Fever superstar Clark finally addressed her stance on the debate, with a fence-sitting middle-of-the-road answer which angered fans on both sides of the spectrum, but not Portnoy.

Right-wing political influencer Megyn Kelly called Clark a coward for not supporting Cunningham’s comments publicly, leading to Dave Portnoy defending the 24-year-old WNBA star.

“Absolute moron/idiot to call Caitlin a coward for this answer. 1st of all, you don’t even know how she feels on this issue, and more importantly, she doesn’t owe it to you or anybody else to be your political talking point. She just wants to play ball. Total coward, cheap shot to call her a coward for not being your puppet.”

This is the perfect response from Portnoy. Clark is focusing on playing her sport to the best of her ability and doesn’t owe anyone her political thoughts.

Regardless of how she personally feels, Clark isn’t looking to add more division over a topic that has already been majorly polarising within the WNBA and has led to non-basketball-related questions dominating the discourse.

What did Caitlin Clark say about the Sophie Cunningham controversy?​

After the Fever’s 100-108 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, Clark publicly addressed where she and the rest of the Fever stand relating to Cunningham’s comments and the ensuing controversy.

“It’s not a discussion we have in our locker room; it’s for the leagues and the governing bodies to find solutions. My focus is on basketball and how we can get wins.”

This debate is likely going to continue for the next few weeks until WNBA Playoff basketball can hopefully bring the attention back onto the court.

The Fever are 19-11 this season and tied for fifth in the standings, hoping to make a deep Playoff run and return to the WNBA Finals.
