The Los Angeles Rams will take a hard look at their secondary this offseason after being gashed in the NFC championship game. And with two first-round picks, it's pretty easy for them to upgrade the entire unit without breaking the bank in free agency.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah went through his second mock draft of the offseason ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine and handed the Rams two defensive backs with the team's two first-round picks: Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 13 and Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood at No. 29.

The Rams had a good look at how the Seahawks deployed Nick Emmanwori with great success in his rookie year. McNeil-Warren offers L.A. its own playmaking, rangy safety, boosting a pass defense that has struggled in recent years. He teams with Kamren Kinchens and Quentin Lake to create a nice safety trio.

The Rams double down on the secondary in Round 1 with free agency threatening to eat into their DB depth. Emmanuel McNeil-Warren and Hood can both take the ball away.

This strategy assumed a few things happened before the draft: 1) the Rams led Kamren Curl go in free agency. Defensive coordinator Chris Shula enjoyed success with the trio of Kinchens, Lake and Curl in 2025, but it wouldn't make sense for the Rams to draft another safety in a crowded room. Then, 2) the Rams likely also let one of their impending free-agent cornerbacks go as well, such as Cobie Durant, Roger McCreary and/or Akhello Witherspoon. L.A. may have also moved on from Darious Williams, given his nonguaranteed salary for 2026.

Drafting two secondary pieces is a quick way to fix arguably the worst unit on the team. McNeil-Warren finished his college career with 214 combined tackles (106 solo), 11 tackles for a loss, five interceptions and 13 defended passes. Hood, meanwhile, tallied three interceptions, 77 combined tackles (57 solo) and 14 defended passes in the past two seasons.

General manager Les Snead already hinted at attacking the secondary this offseason. This draft scenario would be the biggest indication he was telling the truth.
