Conor McGregor has received the least ideal diagnosis for his knee after UFC 329.
McGregor's (22-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) comeback fight after five years ended in disaster this month when the former two-division champion injured his knee on the first strike attempt of the fight against Max Holloway (28-9 MMA, 24-9 UFC). The bout was waved off just 69 seconds after it began when it was clear "The Notorious" was injured, and there's since been speculation about the exact nature of his injury.
Although McGregor previously shared that he would need surgery, he did not clarify exactly what damage his post-fight testing revealed. According to UFC CEO Dana White it's the worst-case scenario of a torn ACL.
"(It's the) ACL," White told reporters at Saturday's UFC Fight Night 281 post-event news conference. "His knee's f*cked up."
Sunday, McGregor finally posted the nature of his injury and said his ACL and meniscus are torn – and also hinted he plans to be back in less than a year the way he did when he suffered the same injury in 2013, but on the opposite knee.
The significance of the injury closes the doors on discussing McGregor's future with the UFC any time soon. It's well document the Irishman has just one fight remaining on his current UFC contract, and it was originally intended to happen in April 2027 before the unfortunate ending at UFC 329.
White said he will not put any thought into what options could be available for McGregor's potential final UFC fight, because there any many steps to get through before that becomes a reality.
"The Conor McGregor discussion isn't even worth talking about," White said. "He's got to have knee surgery, he's going to have to through physical therapy. It's all going to take time. Then when the doctor says, 'You can start hardcore training again,' then we start talking about Conor McGregor again."
