PHILADELPHIA - After his UConn basketball team beat UCLA Sunday night to advance to the Sweet 16, Dan Hurley was asked what it meant for the Big East to have its headliners advance to the East Regional stage in Washington where the Huskies will face Michigan State and St. John’s will take on Duke in a high-octane semifinal doubleheader.

His answer was solid gold.

“It was much-needed coming off of a three-bid year,” Hurley said. “Obviously Seton Hall was close. They did their part in the non-conference. Seton Hall really got hurt by the overall league (quality) this year. Shaheen (Holloway) did a great job, but he got no help by the conference this year.”

Hurley is a Jersey City native and former Seton Hall guard.

“Us and St. John’s are two of the best teams in the country,” he added. “Obviously we hope for a meeting in D.C. (in Sunday’s regional final). I guess it stinks a little bit that they threw us both in the same region. It feels like the combination of St. John’s being under-seeded as well as us both being in the same region...”

Then Hurley paused, stopping himself short of raising conspiracy theories.

“I don’t want to get myself in trouble with the selection committee or the NCAA,” he said.

Will Dan Hurley make a scene during March Madness? 'Get a life, bro.'

The he turned his attention to the prospect of a fourth meeting between the Big East rivals.

“It’ll be a live building,” he added. “Obviously we’ve got to try to support each other. I think it’s pretty brutal on Twitter and social between our fan bases, but I think we’ve got to try to come together on Friday night against our opponents so that we could have a bloodbath Sunday.”
