COLUMBIA, Mo. — Iowa State softball (15-10, 0-3 Big 12) took on three teams from three conferences at Mizzou Softball Field Friday and Saturday, the Big 10, the Southeastern Conference and the Summit League.
Game one
The Cyclones opened up the classic with a 3-0 win against Minnesota (9-17, 1-2 Big Ten) on Friday. Lauren Schurman, of Newark, Del., recorded her first career complete-game shutout in the win.
Iowa State had been searching for a spark through three quiet innings Saturday. It finally arrived in the fourth — and it was more than enough.
Kadence Shepherd delivered the first run and pinch hitter Victoria Prado drove in two more as the Cyclones broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning and went on to defeat Minnesota 3-0.
For much of the game, neither lineup could solve the opposing pitching. Minnesota went quietly in the first inning as Tara Wolocko grounded out, Maggie Werner fouled out and Scarlett Kuhn flied out. Iowa State matched it with three quick outs of its own when Jessie Clemons grounded out, Tatum Johnson fouled out and Reagan Bartholomew flied out.
The Golden Gophers produced the first real threat in the second inning. Tinley Easton drew a walk and moved to second on Cassie Johnson’s sacrifice bunt. Sydney Schwartz then grounded out to push Easton to third, but Brooklyn Jones lined out to second base to strand the runner.
Iowa State broke through two innings later. Bartholomew opened the fourth with a walk and moved to second when Karlee Ford dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Sydney Malott followed with another walk, giving the Cyclones two on with one out.
Shepherd delivered from there. By connecting on a single, Bartholomew made it across the plate for a 1-0 lead.
Kasey Kane then singled to right which juiced the bases and kept the inning alive. After Tiana Poole struck out for the second out of the frame, Prado came through in a big moment. At the plate as a pinch hitter, she lined a single to center field that brought home Malott and Shepherd, extending Iowa State’s lead to 3-0.
Minnesota had a few chances to answer but could never break through. Maggie Werner and Scarlett Kuhn recorded back-to-back singles in the sixth inning, but Iowa State worked out of the inning without damage.
The Cyclones also threatened again in the sixth when McKenna Andrews singled and Clemons followed with a double to right-center field to put runners on second and third. Minnesota escaped the inning with a groundout.
Minnesota made one final push in the seventh. Kylinn Stangl walked and Jones singled before Lucy Hooper also singled, but Stangl was ruled out at third base for interference, stopping the rally before it could gain momentum.
From there, Iowa State recorded the final outs to finish off the shutout and secure the win.
Game two
Iowa State finished Friday 2-0 with a 9-4 win over South Dakota after using seven unanswered runs to take control of the game.
South Dakota took the early lead in the second inning. A leadoff walk and an Ella McGee double put two runners in scoring position before a wild pitch brought in the game’s first run. An RBI groundout later in the inning extended the Coyotes’ advantage to 2-0.
Iowa State responded in the third inning. Hayleigh Oliver led off with a single, and McKenna Andrews followed with a two-run home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2. The Cyclones moved in front an inning later when Oliver connected on a two-run home run to center field after a one-out walk, giving Iowa State a 4-2 lead.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the sixth inning. After a single and a walk put two runners on base, Jessie Clemons hit a three-run home run to center field with two outs, extending Iowa State’s lead to 7-2.
Iowa State added two more runs in the seventh inning to build a 9-2 advantage. South Dakota scored twice in the bottom half of the inning in an attempt to rally, but the Cyclones held on to secure the 9-4 win.
Reagan Bartholomew finished with three hits to lead Iowa State at the plate, while Clemons and Oliver each added two hits. Clemons, Oliver and Andrews all homered for the Cyclones. Kiya Johnson recorded two hits and drew a walk to lead South Dakota offensively.
Game three
Iowa State erased an early four-run deficit but could not complete the comeback Saturday, falling 6-4 to the Missouri Tigers softball at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Missouri scored four runs in the first inning before Iowa State settled in. Abby Carr delivered a three-run double during the opening frame, and Madison Uptegrove followed with an RBI double to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
The Cyclones began their response in the second inning when Tatum Johnson hit a solo home run to center field to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Iowa State pulled even in the third. Hayleigh Oliver reached on a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by McKenna Andrews before Jessie Clemons doubled down the left-field line to bring Oliver home. Reagan Bartholomew then tied the game with a two-run homer to center, knotting the score at 4-4.
Missouri regained the lead in the fourth inning. Kayley Lenger singled and later scored on Addy Waits’ RBI double to right field to put the Tigers ahead 5-4.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth when Carr singled to center to drive in a run and make it 6-4.
Iowa State threatened in the sixth after Johnson singled and Kadence Shepherd reached on an error, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Missouri pitcher Abby Carr escaped the jam with a strikeout to preserve the lead.
Johnson finished 2 for 3 with a home run to lead the Cyclones offensively, while Bartholomew’s two-run homer highlighted Iowa State’s three-run third inning. Jessie Clemons added a double and an RBI.
Jaiden Ralston (1-3) took the loss in relief for Iowa State.
