Cubs predicted to sign $38.5M Cy Young-caliber arm to salvage rotation after Cade Horton injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago Cubs have gotten off to a rocky start this season, but the good news is there is still plenty of time to turn things around. Chicago has not started the way it had hoped, which has created early challenges.
“The early part of the season has seen the Cubs stumble out of the gate. They have lost six of their first 11 games and they are in last place in the NL Central. A poor start is not necessarily an indication that the season will turn out to be a failure, but it could be indicative of the problems that could impact the team throughout the season,” ClutchPoints’ Steve Silverman wrote.
Disaster struck the Cubs’ pitching rotation when it was announced that starter Cade Horton will undergo season-ending surgery.
“Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton will have season-ending surgery to repair damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday,” ESPN wrote.
Chicago will now evaluate every possible option to bring in another starter. There are still a few free agents available, with one notable name being Lucas Giolito.
“Giolito enjoyed a slight return to form for the Red Sox last year, finishing with a 3.41 ERA and 2.1 bWAR over 145 innings. Both marked his best totals since 2021, though he’s oddly remained unsigned all offseason. Unless there’s something that we don’t know about, there is no reason why Giolito should still be available. It would be one thing if he had a poor spring training and a team released him during their final cuts, but he didn’t even get a minor-league contract this past offseason,” FanSided’s Jake Elman wrote.
Giolito is coming off a $38.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander got off to a shaky start in 2025 but finished strong, which makes it surprising that he remains unsigned.
Giolito also finished in the top six of Cy Young voting in 2019, showing the level of talent he has possessed during his career. The Cubs would be wise to pursue a deal with him; otherwise, the rotation could continue to face major question marks.
