Training camp is a place where several Dallas Cowboys will be fighting to be pushed further up the depth chart, while for others, they will be fighting for their NFL lives.
There are ample storylines to follow over the next month, most on defense as Christian Parker's vision takes shape in Oxnard, but on the offensive side of the ball, there are a couple as well.
The left tackle battle between Tyler Guyton and Nate Thomas, Luke Schoonmaker and his spot on the depth chart, and running back Jaydon Blue, who will be looking to finally establish himself in Brian Schottenheimer's offense.
But there is also one more: Joe Milton and Sam Howell. Who will be Dak Prescott's backup?

This will be Milton's third year in Dallas, and the fact that the Cowboys signed Howell, who has skins on the wall as a starter (5-18 in his career), is a big thread to pull here.
And as our own Mike Fisher explains, everything is on the line for Joe in Oxnard.
"The writing is on the wall in terms of what's going on now," Fish said. "This will be year three, and if the Cowboys had complete confidence that he was going to step in, be the number two quarterback, and maybe take over someday, they would have never signed Sam Howell. I don't think when they do their initial 53-man, that they're keeping three quarterbacks.
"So it's a battle. It is not only a backup quarterback number two job battle, it's also a battle for a roster spot, even immediate roster spot. Even though if they cut one of them, and I think they will, they would eventually bring him back."

It does feel like Howell was signed for one of two reasons.
First, to push Milton to develop a little quicker to ease Dallas' concerns if he has to step in for Dak to bus drive the Cowboys to a game.
The other is that the Cowboys aren't sold on Milton's progression as a quarterback, and Howell isn't just an insurance policy, but a legitimate candidate to oust Joe as the backup.
We know of Milton's physical skillset, which is something Howell doesn't have, but what he does have is the ability to play the quarterback position more consistently than Milton right now.
Could that change in Oxnard? Sure, but if it doesn't, as Fish stated, the writing is on the wall as far as Milton's standing on the Cowboys' roster.
