The Magic have failed to advance past the first round in each of their last three playoff appearances, and as the franchise's core continues to mature, expectations continue to rise. If Orlando gets off to another disappointing start, it wouldn't be surprising to see the front office explore changes.
Although there has been speculation surrounding the futures of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, moving on from two young franchise cornerstones remains highly unlikely. If changes are made, they're far more likely to come from the supporting cast around them without shaking up their star duo
On a recent episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, host Don Strouble discussed the future of Orlando's star duo and identified two players who could emerge as trade candidates if the Magic fail to meet expectations early in the season.
“We know it's going to be more difficult,” Strouble said. “We know this Eastern Conference landscape is going to be lethal, but I just don't agree with the notion that Wagner or Banchero would be the first out the door if the Magic have another underwhelming campaign. Given the nature of how this organization works, there is going to be a chance for Sean Sweeney to do what he needs to do, and barring any catastrophes, once again, I just don't see any of those two guys going. I believe it would be someone like Jalen Suggs first, maybe a Wendell Carter Jr., so on and so forth.”
Bleacher Report raised the question of whether the Orlando Magic could be approaching a point where significant roster changes are necessary after three consecutive first-round playoff exits.
The article pointed to the investment Orlando made in Desmond Bane, including four first-round picks, as another reason the lack of postseason progress has become more concerning. When healthy, the projected starting lineup of Jalen Suggs, Bane, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. has performed well together, but injuries limited the group to only 408 possessions on the floor as a unit.
Bleacher Report also highlighted Orlando's continued offensive struggles and the fact that Banchero has yet to make the superstar leap many expected from the former No. 1 overall pick. That leaves the Magic facing an important decision: continue trusting their young core to develop together or consider a major shakeup if the current formula fails to produce deeper playoff success.
