Vic Fangio has earned a reputation as one of the NFL's sharpest minds. The Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator is equally meticulous, demanding, and unapologetically old school. He's the type of coach most fans picture with a play sheet in one hand and a game film remote in the other.
That's why one recent offseason appearance caught so many people by surprise. As the Eagles wrapped up mandatory minicamp, none of us probably expected Fangio to start a podcast tour. Hang on for a second. He still probably won't, but he certainly didn't disappear either.
Instead, the 67-year-old defensive coordinator stopped by Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship's Exciting Mics podcast, offering Eagles fans a rare glimpse of the personality they don't often get to see on Sundays. Among the highlights was a rapid-fire segment in which Fangio answered a series of "Who's more likely to…?" questions, choosing between Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship as the hosts tried to put their coach on the spot.
Coach Fangio's exchange with both current and former pupils produced plenty of laughs and showcased a lighter side of the Eagles' DC that rarely surfaces during press conferences or on game days. Known for his dry wit and straightforward demeanor, he appeared relaxed, smiling throughout the segment, while happily playing along as a featured guest.
For Eagles fans accustomed to seeing Fangio dissect coverages or discuss defensive fundamentals, it was a refreshing reminder that even one of football's most respected tacticians enjoys stepping away from the X's and O's every once in a while.
The moment won't change how Fangio prepares one of the NFL's top defenses. At least it shouldn't, but it did offer something fans rarely get, an opportunity to see the coach behind the headset instead of the coordinator behind the scheme.
Maybe that's one of the unexpected benefits of the offseason. Between practices, meetings, and the long grind toward another championship pursuit, there's finally enough time for personalities to shine through. And if Fangio's appearance taught Eagles fans anything, it's that even one of football's most old-school coaches isn't above sharing a laugh when the opportunity presents itself.

Vic Fangio proves he knows how to have fun, too
