Sophomore slumps are very common in professional sports. After a great first season, leagues adjust to young stars in the game, and it is up to the players to find a way to adjust themselves to be prepared.
It happens in every sport.
It might just happen to Washington Commanders phenom quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Daniels won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2024 and helped Washington reach the NFC Title game for the first time in 30 years. Despite several examples of recent quarterbacks struggling in their second year in the league, Daniels doesn't believe he will go through a slump this year.
“I’m sitting down and watching film and trying to eliminate some tendencies as much as possible,” Daniels said to Yahoo Sports. “Talking to the coaching staff on areas that they feel like I need to improve on, having conversations so we can all hit full speed.”
Whether Daniels admits it or not, sophomore slumps are very real. C.J. Stroud, 2023's Offensive Rookie of the Year (and savior of the Houston Texans) struggled mightily in 2024 despite winning a playoff game this past year.
Others like Dak Prescott and other young quarterbacks simply missed the playoffs entirely after a strong first year with their team.
Daniels has the temperament and skill to ignore those kinds of slumps, though. If Washington can stay healthy, they very well be "slump proof" going into the new season for both Daniels and their team.
