Commanders free agent Austin Ekeler gets major injury update originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Austin Ekeler is a bit of a forgotten man in NFL free agency at the moment.
The long-time Chargers running back, a true threat as a runner and receiver, spent the past two seasons with the Washington Commanders.
The problem is that early last season, he tore his Achilles.
That ended his season, and it sent him toward the end of a contract year with a lot of uncertainty.
The good news for Ekeler is that it sounds like he's healing nicely:

The bad news is that he doesn't yet have a team.
Ekeler is set to turn 31 years old on May 17, which is ancient in NFL running back years.
There have been a few more aging success stories in the backfield of late, but it's not an easy hurdle to overcome, especially coming off the injury Ekeler had.
The Commanders certainly don't need him back. They've overloaded their backfield and are likely looking at one surprise cut at the end of the preseason if everyone stays healthy.
Ekeler's best bet may be to wait this out, kind of like Nick Chubb did last year, before identifying a backfield closer to the season that has a definite need.
