Mason Marchment didn’t allow negative thoughts to linger after his spoiled attempt to tap home a tying goal late in the Blue Jackets’ 2-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on March 26.

The Blue Jackets forward will face the San Jose Sharks on March 28 at Nationwide Arena with a clear mind after watching replays that confirmed how the puck slid from inside the crease to outside the right goal post with 36 seconds left to play. Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes, an Ohio State alum, made a desperation save he wasn't credited for.

“Once we got on the bus, it was old news,” Marchment said March 27. “I got to see it, and it was just unlucky. I mean, I think his glove came down and hit my stick right as I was trying to hit it in, and it just got a piece of it.”

So, what resembled a flub on a short putt wasn’t all Marchment’s doing. An opposing “golfer” gave it some unwanted help, just as Dobes did in a 25-save victory to win a game mostly dominated by the Blue Jackets.

“I wanted to see (the replay) because I felt something, and I wanted to know if it was the (defenseman) behind me or the goalie’s glove,” Marchment said. “I know that it wasn’t just me shanking it. Luckily (for Dobes), he got a piece of me, and it happens.”

Blue Jackets fans may feel that it happens to Columbus players a little too often, but those plays are the kind that make hockey unique and addictive to people who love it.

“Hockey’s a game of inches, it really is, and there’s a perfect example of it,” Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness said. “Those are the inches we’re talking about. If you have a shot that hits the post, it’s a game of inches sometimes … but that’s hockey, right? A situation like (Marchment’s missed shot), that’s hockey.”
