Training camp for the Indianapolis Colts kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what's to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.

What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, how training camp and the preseason unfold will ultimately determine who wins these roles.

Next up is the linebacker position.

What Colts' training camp battle is taking place at linebacker?

There are two things to watch for at the linebacker position for the Colts. The first is that while we assume CJ Allen will start at MIKE linebacker, we don't know who will be starting next to him.

And beyond figuring out who the second starter at linebacker is, how the rest of the depth chart shakes out remains to be seen as well.

What did we learn during offseason programs?

From the sounds of it, the Colts are doing plenty of mixing and matching as they search for their best starting combination. According to Jake Aruthur, in addition to Allen seeing reps with the ones, so did Akeem Davis-Gaither, Jaylon Carlies, and Bryce Boettcher.

Boettcher, in particular, seemed to stand out, with ESPN's Stephen Holder noting that he could "make a legitimate push to start."

It's also worth watching if someone else, like Austin Ajiake or UDFA West Weeks, can emerge on special teams to secure a roster spot. Many teams keep five linebackers, but for what it's worth, the Colts only rostered four linebackers on last year's initial 53-man.

Prediction: Who starts at linebacker next to CJ Allen?

Flip a coin. There is still a lot to be determined when it comes to who will fill this role. But considering we are in the early going, I'll still give Davis-Gaither the advantage, given his NFL experience and experience in Lou Anarumo's defense.
