When Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Daniel Jones was navigating pressure last season, Josh Downs was a go-to target for him.
Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus recently highlighted the 10 pass-catchers who were "safety blankets" for their quarterback when plays started to break down, and included was Downs.
From a pure numbers standpoint, Downs' overall production dipped last season with the addition of Tyler Warren, but he remained a reliable presence within the Colts' offense, and these metrics showcase his rapport with Jones.
A quarterback having an outlet option or a Plan B in the event a play goes south is a must, and Downs provided that presence for Jones and the Colts' offense, turning negative plays into positive gains.
More opportunities will be coming Downs' way this season following Michael Pittman's departure. With Pittman now in Pittsburgh, there are 110 targets from last season now up for grabs. Replicating Pittman's production will be a group effort, but Downs figures to be a big part of that equation.

"Downs’ chemistry with Daniel Jones was especially evident when the pressure was mounting," Cameron wrote. "His 21.7% target rate led the team by more than 6%, with the pair also combining for a team-leading 14 first downs when pressured."
