One of the favorites at the 2026 Players Championship is out after one hole.

The PGA Tour announced Collin Morikawa withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury he appeared to suffer on his first hole at the event on Thursday, March 12. Morikawa was shown during the ESPN+ broadcast grabbing at his lower back and bending over in discomfort after taking a practice swing before his tee shot on No. 11 at TPC Sawgrass (he started the first round on hole No. 10).

Morikawa received treatment from a physiotherapist before leaving the course and announcing he could no longer compete at this year's Players Championship.

PGA TOUR: Considering drastic changes for future schedule, playoffs

Morikawa, 29, is in the midst of a resurgence during the early portion of the 2026 PGA Tour schedule, with his first win in more than two years at Pebble Beach last month and a fifth-place finish at last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The two-time major winner has moved back up to No. 4 in the world golf rankings and leads the 2026 FedEx Cup points standings after falling as low as No. 19. In 2025, Morikawa had just one top-10 finish after last year's Players Championship.

As first-round play began at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday, Morikawa had the third-best odds in the field behind only Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
