It wasn't surprising that Cody Rhodes dropped his Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 41, but it was how he lost that will have dramatic long-term implications. Beyond the absurd Travis Scott run-in, Rhodes' inability to clock Cena with his title belt on the "Grandest Stage of Them All" was a disastrous case of idiotic babyface syndrome.
"The American Nightmare" has been off television since the defeat. Rhodes helped put the company on his back for over a year, and as a viewer, his absence leaves a massive void in weekly programming. So when should fans expect Rhodes back on their screen?

According to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Rhodes' return is a bit up in the air. "Cody Rhodes is no longer listed as a "featured superstar" for tonight or next week's WWE SmackDown," Sapp reported to X. "He's listed for May 16 as the earliest."
That would put Rhodes in line to appear at the first SmackDown after Backlash. Many fans in Sapp's comment section were theorizing the PLE could be where Rhodes makes his comeback.
If Rhodes simply gets his strap back at the end of the year, it will be compelling to see what the 39-year-old does in the interim. He has a ready-made rivalry with Randy Orton that has yet to come to fruition, but beyond that, there isn't a clear path.
Regardless of what he does, Rhodes is an elite performer who can make the most out of his situation. It'll be fun to see what the next chapter of his story might entail.
