Apr. 7—MITCHELL — The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association has announced its 2026 Region Coach of the Year selections, highlighted by multiple honorees across boys and girls basketball.
Parkston led the way for area boys basketball in Region 7, with head coach Bill Marquardt and assistant coach Matt Grave both earning top honors after an impressive season, finishing with a record of 18-4. Freeman's Lance Friesen, the Class B state champion coach at 24-2, was region head coach of the year in Region 6.
In girls basketball, the Region 7 coach of the year was Ethan head coach Tom Young, who coached the Class B state champion Rustlers. Wagner assistant Tera Koupal was the girls Region 7 assistant coach of the year. The Red Raiders had an eighth-place finish in the Class A state tournament with a 19-5 record.
As lower-level girls coaches, Avon's Becky Haenfler and Wall's Ashley Kier shared Region 5-8 coach of the year honors.
