The Los Angeles Clippers added multiple veterans to the roster during the offseason, including center Brook Lopez. This season is the 18th of Lopez’s career and he will turn 38 on April 1.
In a recent interview with NBA insider Marc J. Spears, Lopez opened up about when he plans to retire. He said he has been inspired by the careers of Hall of Famers like Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant to play in the NBA for at least two decades.
“I always had a number of 20 years. A lot of great players played 20 years [whom] I looked up to. Timmy [Duncan], Kobe [Bryant]. I think Ticket [Kevin Garnett] got there. That’s always been a goal of mine, but I feel great. So now that we’re as far along as we are, I don’t really want to put a cap on it. Just see how long we can keep going until we fall,” Lopez said to Spears.
Lopez is currently averaging 7.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 64 games this season.

Will Lopez Retire as a Clipper?
Lopez signed a two-year, $18 million deal with the Clippers that spans through the 2026-27 season. By the time this contract expires, Lopez will have played the 19th season of his NBA career.
If Lopez wants to play for at least 20 seasons, he will have to either sign a new contract with the Clippers or find a deal with a new team. Lopez’s most successful years have been with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2018-25. With the Bucks, Lopez won an NBA championship in 2021 and was a two-time All-Defensive team member.
Lopez has also played with the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. The Nets drafted Lopez with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, and he spent the first nine seasons of his career with the organization. Lopez also earned the only All-Star selection of his career while playing for the Nets in 2013.
Lopez could certainly retire as a Clipper. But he also has strong ties to other teams and may want to finish his career with a different team.
