Clemson baseball nearly erased a late deficit but couldn’t finish the comeback, falling 5-4 to No. 9 Virginia on Saturday in the series rubber match.
The Tigers slipped to 25-16 overall and 6-12 in ACC play, continuing a tough stretch in conference series.
Clemson grabbed the early edge in the first inning. Tryston McCladdie reached after being hit by a pitch, quickly swiped second, and moved to third before Jacob Jarrell brought him in with a single to right. Jarrell’s hit extended his streak to 10 straight games.
Virginia answered immediately in unusual fashion. Harrison Didawick sent a ball deep to center that bounced off the wall, allowing him to circle the bases for what was ruled an inside-the-park home run, tying the game at 1-1.
The Cavaliers took control over the next few innings. Joe Tiroly launched a solo shot in the third, and Sam Harris added another in the fourth to stretch the lead. An RBI single from Kyle Johnson in the sixth made it 4-1.
Clemson began to chip away in the seventh. Dylan Harrison, making his first at-bat of the season, delivered a pinch-hit single and later scored on a double by Nate Savoie to cut into the deficit.
Virginia responded again, as Didawick struck for his second homer of the day in the seventh, pushing the lead to 5-2.
The Tigers didn’t go quietly. Luke Gaffney led off the eighth with a home run, and Bryce Clavon followed with a solo shot of his own to bring Clemson within one.
Clemson threatened in the ninth after a leadoff single, but Virginia’s bullpen shut the door, retiring the next three hitters to seal the win.
Clemson returns home Tuesday night to face USC Upstate, looking to bounce back after another narrow conference loss.
