Liam Rosenior suggested before Chelsea's trip to Paris that he views the goalkeeping position much like any outfield role - one that can be frequently rotated.
This hinted that Filip Jorgensen would return to the side, and seeing his name on the teamsheet immediately raised concerns.
Selecting Jorgensen, who has played only a handful of cup games, was always a gamble in a match of such magnitude, and Chelsea ultimately paid the price.
We saw a similar scenario with Tottenham against Atletico Madrid, when young keeper Antonin Kinsky was handed a European debut - a decision that backfired, reinforcing the dangers of inexperience at the highest level.
Robert Sanchez isn't flawless, but over the season, he has established himself as Chelsea's number one and grown into an important vocal presence.
So much so that he's been in conversations for player of the season, making his absence on such an important night all the more surprising.
With 20 minutes left to play in Paris, the Blues were still firmly in the game. By full-time, the tie felt effectively over.
Jorgensen's uncertainty and poor decision-making shifted the momentum, allowing PSG's pressing attack to capitalise on errors from woeful play out from the back.
But once frustration with Jorgensen and Rosenior subsides, attention will inevitably turn to recruitment.
If neither goalkeeper has clearly made the position his own, Chelsea will no doubt need to address this position in the summer.
